Highlonesome Festival is a whirlwind of music, nature, and good vibes, with something for everyone! Groove to live tunes from amazing artists, get your hands dirty on mushroom walks with the Missouri Mycological Society, and dive into the wonders of the edible forest. Kids can explore their creativity in art and pottery workshops, and when the sun dips, the magic of midnight storytelling fills the air in the walnut grove. And if you’re still buzzing with energy, stick around for the midnight campfire jam, where musicians gather to share their voices and tunes under the stars, creating a truly unforgettable night.
FORAGING HIKES
The mushroom walk at Highlonesome Festival takes you through woods that have been lovingly cared for and largely undisturbed for decades. The soil here is rich, the earth is alive, and that means you’ll find some truly rare and special species of mushrooms and plants along the way. Led by local expert Bo Brown and the team at the Missouri Mycological Society, you’ll get an up-close look at the unique fungi and flora that thrive in this protected space, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for nature lovers and curious explorers alike.

Music! Campfires! Storytelling!... Film Fest??!!
We at Highlonesome are ecstatic to announce the First Annual Highlonesome Short Film Festival!
The SATO 48 film making community joins the Highlonesome Music community in 2026 to expand on the year’s theme “This might be the scariest thing that ever happened to me.”
Jeff Clinkenbeard will host the First Annual Highlonesome Short Film Festival at 11:00 pm, Friday, September 4 at the Daybreak Stage.
You’ll watch a slew of locally made short & scary films, drawn from SATO48’s deep vault, selected to fit this year’s festival theme: “This might be the scariest thing that ever happened to me.” Q&A with SATO48 filmmakers to follow!
Brought to you by the Missouri Film Office, this event will also feature the world premiere of “GOAT,” a short film produced and filmed at Dockley Ranch.
MIDNIGHT STORYTELLING
As the night settles in and the stars take over the sky, come gather in the walnut grove for our midnight storytelling sessions—a tradition that’s as old as the Ozarks themselves. Nestled among towering walnut trees, you’ll hear tales that echo the voices of those who came before us, just like the Ozark ancestors did around their own campfires. This is one of the most human traditions: sharing stories, connecting to the land, and feeling the magic in the air.
This year's storyteller is Brother John.
HIGHLONESOME ORIGINAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION
The Highlonesome Music Festival’s Original Songwriting Competition is full! Let's root on our favorite singer/songwriter for a chance to win a slot in the 2027 lineup, festival promotion, and a featured YouTube performance recap. Acts will be judged on originality, musicianship, and connection to this year’s theme: "This might be the most frightening thing that ever happened to me."
HIGHLONESOME YOUTH OUTPOST ACTIVITIES
Our kids’ workshops are designed to spark creativity and curiosity in young minds, with certified caretakers ensuring a safe and nurturing environment. Led by festival leaders who are natural educators, the learning comes to life in a way that feels organic and exciting. From art to pottery, children can explore their creative side while also connecting with nature and the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
CAMPFIRE JAM
When the stars light up the sky, gather ‘round the campfire for the legendary midnight jam – a tradition that started the festival and still shines bright today, even as we grow. This spontaneous musical gathering invites musicians of all kinds to share their voices and sounds with a supportive, welcoming audience, creating a raw and authentic experience.
GOAT YOGA
Ever tried yoga with a goat by your side? Here’s your chance! With 50 (and counting!) goats roaming around the property, Goat Yoga is the perfect way to stretch and unwind with a little extra fun. These friendly, curious creatures will keep you laughing while you find your zen—whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just looking for something lighthearted and relaxing in nature.
PARKING LOT JAMS
When you’re taking a break or just arriving, don’t miss the spontaneous parking lot jams happening all around the festival grounds. These impromptu musical gatherings will have you tapping your feet and soaking in the high-energy, folksy vibe of Highlonesome. Whether it’s a fiddle, banjo, or guitar, the parking lot is where the festival’s energy comes to life, welcoming everyone to join in, play, or simply enjoy the tunes while you take in the atmosphere.
